THE HISTORY OF MANNYS
When you shop at Mannys you don’t just get the gear, you get the knowledge and expertise of 25 years of experience as one of Australia’s most influential independent music retailers.
In the beginning…
After managing the Allan’s City store for 10 years, an ambitious Manny Gauci-Seddon decided to open his own music store. He wanted his shop to uphold the values of true support and after sale service, and to form genuine ongoing relationships with his customer base. The trends of the industry at that time were pointing to more of a disposable, corporate mentality and so in the early years he set out to make a name for himself as a serious independent alternative.
The first store was a funky shop in Smith Street, Collingwood in 1991. By 1998 Manny had outgrown this store and saw the need to focus more on the upcoming computer based recording revolution. He established an address in Johnson St Fitzroy as the Arts were booming on the north side of the city. In the same year the opportunity came to acquire a business on Chapel St – the Revolver Music Gallery. With a two store operation Manny was now making the difference he set out to 7 years earlier. The Mannys brand was known for knowledge and service and the staff were greatly sought after for their experience. Unlike the other major players the focus was not just on sales but also on the process of making music.
When the opportunity came to consolidate into one superstore, the North Fitzroy address seemed perfect for the move. Manny wanted to expand his customer base to include more of the musicians turning to the internet due to the lacklustre service of his competitors. He took the best from both stores and moved his operation to the hub of music and musicians just north of the city.
In November 2016 Mannys was sold to SoundBay Pty Ltd, the operator of Australia’s largest DJ and production retailer, Store DJ. While the essence of Manny’s Music will always exist, our Mission for Mannys Music going forward is to ensure that we continue to build the ultimate experience for our customers online or in our store. Our sales staff remain knowledgeable, professional; musicians first and sales people second. Mannys Music gives you one hub to purchase all of your gear, and if we don’t have it, we’ll try our hardest to get it for you.
Mannys – The best advice you can give a musician.
WHO WE ARE
| Store Manager/MI Sales |
Chris Green, a.k.a Green for short, is Mannys’ guitar & amp specialist, store manager, and all around go-to guy. Called by the guitar rock gods at an early age, Chris began life at Mannys in the guitar department, now he manages the store.
| Keyboard Specialist/MI Sales |
Steve is Mannys‘ keyboard specialist; an avid collector of synths and a seasoned session musician, you can find him grazing in his natural habit of the keyboard department. Steve has played piano and synths for 45 years and in a past life played keyboards with Australian 80s bands Pseudo Echo and Real Life, touring both nationally and internationally with each; his experience spans the world of analog gear including synths, samplers, drum machines, sequencers and effects.
| Guitar Specialist/MI Sales |
David is the Mannys’ acoustic guitars specialist; having developed a love of timber from his years growing up in the wilds of England’s South West (where he was raised by a family of musically-inclined badgers). When he’s not drooling over lists of acoustic guitar specs, David spends his time praying to the Telecaster Gods… and even manages to spend some time with his family, when he can.
| Hi-Tech Specialist/MI Sales | Specialising in the Hi-Tech department at Manny’s, Adrian was hatched in Australia raised in Portland, Oregon USA. He has been recording the sounds of Melbourne for nearly 20 years at Incubator Recording and Mastering. Whenever in need of upgrading his studio recording rig, Mannys was the first and last stop period. Prior to joining the team, Adrian had been shopping at Mannys since the store first opened in 1991. He has been on both sides of the fence as a performer and engineer. Adrian is able to bring this recording and music knowledge to help Manny’s customers decide on the best gear for their needs. He also understands the musician (as well as this is possible), playing bass guitar as well as the mixing desk!

Rob is a music enthusiast with an Audio Visual Technology background. While completing a Bachelor of Arts in Music in early 2015 he joined Mannys as an all rounder. A modest home studio owner he is very keen on making things fit, Electric Guitars play louder and Hi Tech equipment function correctly… Not sure whether he is a bigger fan of AC or DC electricity?
